This is the battle of the billionaires. Just yesterday, Jeff Bezos overtook Bill Gates as the world’s richest person when Amazon’s stock opened at 1.6% on Thursday morning, adding $1.4bn to his net worth. The lead lasted only briefly though, as Bill Gates has now reclaimed his spot as top dog after Amazon’s share price dipped in the afternoon.
Jeff Bezos, who is 53 is the founder of Amazon.com the world’s largest online shopping retailer. He founded in 1994 and initially operated from his garage, before making it into the big time. He retains a 17% stake in the company and only increased its value by 40%.
Bill Gates is the founder of Microsoft and also the creator of Giving Pledge, a campaign set up to encourage billionaires to give at least half of their wealth to charitable causes. So far, as at the end of 2016, Gates has given away $32.9 billion of his wealth to charity. Gates also runs the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a philanthropic organisation that employs more than 1,400.
